On March 27, 2017, Brazilian news outlets ran a strange story about the mysterious disappearance of Bruno Borges. By day, Borges was a Psychology student, but – according to his family – he spent much of his free time working on a secretive project that was meant to “change humanity in a good way.”
While the press runs stories about people disappearing all too frequently, the creepy circumstances that followed Borges’s departure caught the attention of news outlets and conspiracy theorists alike.
Shortly after Borges was reported missing, a mysterious video of his bedroom was leaked onto Youtube. The video, shot by an unknown party, revealed the inner world of a mind obsessed with the extraterrestrial. The walls and floors of Borges’s apartment were lined with cryptic writings, and a $2,500 statue of cosmological theorist Giordano Bruno stood in the center of the room.
On top of the texts that covered the house, Borges left behind 14 handwritten books, all filled to the brim with coded messages. The discovery of the books caused many to believe that deciphering the codes would yield information on Borges’s whereabouts, and prompted a crowdsourced decryption effort on social media.
Then, less than six months later, Borges returned home unscathed. For some, the student’s reappearance served to confirm that the whole episode was nothing more than an elaborate hoax, yet speculation about what really happened to Bruno Borges continues on to this day.

Bruno Borges Was Working On A Secret Project
Bruno Borges was constantly asking relatives for money to fund a top secret project. He refused to provide his family with any details regarding the endeavor but assured them that his work would influence humanity positively.
When Borges went missing on March 27, 2017, his father indicated that his son had no money at the time of his disappearance. The family attempted to contact Borges via his cell phone, but it was turned off.

Was Borges Abducted By Aliens?
After a creepy video tour of Borges’s apartment surfaced online, many feared that the student had been abducted by aliens. In his bedroom, Borges had a $2,500 statue of philosopher Giordano Bruno, one of the first thinkers who theorized the existence of extraterrestrial life. On the wall hung a bizarre self-portrait of Borges standing side by side with an alien.
Borges’s bedroom was covered in coded writings; satanic symbols and Illuminati iconography littered the floor. The police who investigated Borges’s disappearance indicated that all possible explanations would be explored.

Authorities Found 14 Books Written In Code
Baffled by his sudden disappearance, Borges’s family and the police searched his bedroom for clues. It was during this investigation that the search party uncovered 14 ordered manuscripts. Each volume of text contained indecipherable writing, and was marked with a red Roman numeral to denote its place in the series.
Although almost no one had any information on the contents of the books, Thales Vasconcelos, a childhood friend of Borges who helped him transcribe the manuscripts, told Brazilian authorities that Borges was obsessed with searching for the meaning of life. According to Vasconcelos, Borges believed that his project was prescribed by higher beings, and the series detailed his discoveries relating to life’s true meaning.

Borges Was Described As The Reincarnation Of Giordano Bruno
Brazilian authorities, attempting to explore every possible avenue of leads relating to Borges’s disappearance, went so far as to track down the artist who forged the statue from Borges’s room. However, the oddities surrounding Borges’s departure only seemed to intensify after the police spoke with Jorge Rivasplata, the statue’s creator.
Rivasplata told authorities that he believes Borges is the reincarnation of philosopher Giordano Bruno. Befuddled, the Brazilian authorities eventually reached out to Interpol asking for help locating Borges. Many believed the message buried in Borges’s writings was the key to deciphering his whereabouts.

After Finding A Book Deal, Authorities Began To Grow Suspicious
Amidst the frantic search for Borges (who authorities initially believed was alive and possibly in distress) doubts about the authenticity of his disappearance started to emerge.
Prior to vanishing, Borges told his family that his secret project involved writing a book. Many became suspicious of Borges, believing that perhaps his disappearance was really a marketing ploy meant to garner publicity for the book he was working on.
In support of this theory, authorities investigated a contract they found inside Borges’s home. The agreement was created 17 days before Borges’s departure, and guaranteed a percentage of the sales revenue from Borges’s upcoming book to several of his friends.

Borges Suddenly Reappeared A Few Months After He Was Reported Missing
On August 11, 2017, Borges reemerged. His return home came shortly after his first book, TAC – Knowledge Absorption Theory, became a bestseller in Brazil. Many speculated that the popularity of the book could have been due to the fact that people had grown to believe that Borges had been carried off by a UFO.
Brazilian news outlets were fascinated with the sudden disappearance of Borges and the cryptic puzzles left in his bedroom. The creepy video of Borges’s apartment, which was released almost in tandem with his disappearance, bore all the signs of an alien abduction. Desperate for answers, how could the people of Brazil not have bought Borges’s book?
Borges Opened His Room To The Public And Charged An Admission Fee
Since his return, Borges has opened his room to the public, treating it like a museum. He charges an entry fee for those who’d like to see his work. About his room, he said:
The room is open for anyone who wants to see. There is a trail in it, which hardly anyone noticed… it’s a work of art that should be an inspiration for people, because it has the spiritual part of that project too… I always open the gate for those who arrive wanting to see.

Brazilian Authorities Firmly Believe Borges Orchestrated A Hoax
Authorities continued to uncover evidence that suggested the abduction was an elaborate hoax orchestrated by Borges. Marcelo Ferreira and Márcio Gaiote — two of Borges’s friends who were included in the revenue agreement that police found — apparently helped Borges move furniture out of his room during a 20-day period when Borges’s family was out of town.
Stranger still, police found Borges’s furniture in the home of his friend and suspected partner, Márcio Gaiote. Brazilian authorities also determined that on the day of his disappearance, Borges had the revenue contract notarized. In response to all this, the authorities opined:
“…it was actually a conscious plan of remoteness, and the contract shows that there is a deadline for Disclosure of these books, deadline for publication, percentage allocation for those who helped him, in the case, those three people who helped him immediately. For us, it is very clear.”

Borges Denies The Incident Was A Publicity Stunt
Borges steadfastly denied that his disappearance was a publicity stunt. Not only did he denounce all accusations that his departure was staged, he even refuted the idea that he was abducted.
Borges claimed to have been on a spiritual journey, and assumed that anyone who knew him would have suspected as much upon finding him gone. His only regret was that he didn’t notify the people closest to him before he left for his journey.
“It was a big mistake that I committed not to have warned those people who have a special affection for me. I thought that with everything I had left, everyone would know that I had been isolated to seek the truth of life, the moment they looked at my room the way I left it.”
His Friend Is Suing Borges For Breaking Their Contract
Borges promised his friend Márcio Gaiote that he would receive a cut of the profits from Borges’s book, TAC. They signed a contract stating that Gaiote would receive 4% of profits from the books.
Gaiote took the case before a judge, who ruled Borges must pay Gaiote the agreed amount.

Borges’s First Book Is Published, And It’s A Smash Hit
Borge’s book, TAC – Knowledge Absorption Theory, was published by Infinity Editorial and Marketing. It is a translation of the first of his 14 coded texts. A painting of a monk — found on Borges’s wall after he disappeared — graces the cover of the book.
The text was highly anticipated before its release, as people were hungry to understand how aliens and the 16th-century occultist philosopher Giordano Bruno tied into Borges’s disappearance. However, the publication of the book also helped fuel the suspicions of Brazilian authorities, and Marcelo Ferreira, Borges’s friend, was even jailed for providing a false testimony to police.
